A Corner of the Universe by Ann Martin

The little girl I babysit before and after school who is in 4th grade was reading this book and I thought it sounded great. Sometimes young adult books are amazing—The Book Thief anyone? So I requested it from the library and dug in.

It’s really good. It’s a quick read too which is nice for busy moms!! It’s told from a 12-year-old girls point of view; one summer she discovers she has an uncle who has special needs. He comes to live with her Grandma for the summer. I can’t really tell you much else without giving anything away except to say it’s worth it. And I’m going to have Gabe read it in a couple of years. It’s really good.

Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott

I just finished reading this book on the suggestion of my friend, Julie E. She wrote me on FB and said “You will LOVE this book. Go get it right now!” So I did. Hey, I’m a good listener, what can I say?

I LOVED it.

I think every Mom should read this while they’re pregnant…or maybe even when they’re just thinking that they want children. It’s so real. That’s the best way to describe it. Real.

It’s basically a journal of her first year as a single mom with her son, Sam. She holds nothing back. I just loved how she described the extreme highs of love and the extreme lows of exhaustion that comes with being a new Mom. She is also hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud several times. I particularly loved the way she described her “village” of people that helped her raise her son. They are amazing, Pammy in particular, and you will find yourself either wishing you had friends like that in your life…or being so thankful and greatful that you have friends and family like that too.

Like my friend Julie said….go get this book. Right now. Go! Then come back and tell me how much you loved it. OKAY??

  1. Yay! So glad you loved the book as much as I did. I always know I’ve read a good book when I either don’t want to leave that world behind or want to write a letter to the author. (I’ve yet to do that yet—too self-conscious!) but I felt like Anne was a friend by the end of the book.

  2. The Bearded Iris

I love so many of the books you’ve listed! Water for Elephants and A Thousand Splendid Suns, especially… could read those every year for the rest of my life.

I will definitely check out Operating Instructions. I adore Anne Lamott! Thanks for the recommendation.

Your family is beautiful and I was really touched by your post today about being teachers. I tried to be a teacher once and SUCKED at it, so I have a special place in my hearts for those who can do it and do it well! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your husband with his job. He sounds like a gem!
