What Did We Used to Do?

Do you ever stop and think about what you used to do? Like before you were married, before you had kids, when the kids were little?

I wish I had kept a journal my whole life. Seriously. Because I would love to go back and see what a day in my life was like especially in college and being newly married.

In college, I worked full-time and went to school full-time and studied a lot so I’m sure that’s what my journal would say. I worked out hours and hours too. But I would love to go back and see on a Saturday in 1995 that Beth, Molly and I walked to Dairy Queen to get a Blizzard, came back and watched a movie, went to a hockey game and out for coffee. I remember that’s what we did, but I wish I had details.

What did Matt and I do on a Saturday when we lived in our apartment that took 30 minutes to deep clean top to bottom and no kids there to mess it up? I spent a lot of time working out and doing lesson plans, but what else? Did we just watch TV? It seems like a million years ago. I have specific memories but I wish I had more.

What was it like when I was pregnant each time? After they came home? When Olivia was first born? I’m so glad I started writing in this space so that, 10 years from now, I’ll have specifics.

Have you always kept a journal? What did you used to do??? Most days I can’t even remember why I walked upstairs…

  1. I hear ya! I love talking with old friends because I get reminded of so many details from high school/college/prekids that I’d forgotten. I love writing things down now….and I have a bajillion pictures that help spark my memory too 🙂

  2. Facebook is like my journal. Which is sad!

  3. I think about this all the time, Tiffany! I didn’t start writing until I had kids and I often wish I had a journal to look back at. What did I do with all that time before I had my three? I know that I felt busy and overworked then (just like I do now), but what was it exactly that was taking up all my time? Hmm…making I’m just a complainer. 🙂

  4. I am so glad I started by blog with my son was a baby – I feel like I wouldn’t remember nearly as much otherwise!

I often debate about starting a journal…but the few times I have done it, I end up cringing when I re-read it because it sounds so silly/embarrassing! Maybe if I just think of it as jotting down memories instead of feelings, I could do it.

  5. I often wonder the exact same or I think back to the days when I polished my nails ALL the time. The second there was a chip in one I would polish them again. Now? I’m lucky to take a shower.

  6. Sometimes I go back and read facebook messages, skype chats, emails, etc. to get a feel for how life was five years ago. Glad I started a blog during my first year teaching! It’s already fun to go back and re-read!

  7. I journaled on and off in college, but never wrote consistently. Looking back always offers perspective.
