Miss Wonder

Music really moves me…and has honestly helped me through some really dark times. I don’t know about you, but there’s little I enjoy more than a new song that speaks to me in some way. I have to be honest and say I don’t really like Natalie Merchant in general. But this song speaks right to my heart. Even if you’ve heard it before, listen again along with the lyrics. When I first paid attention to the words, it blew me away. It brings me to tears every time I listen to it. I just think of one little girl who is a miracle and changed my world forever…Olivia…and how this song must have been written just for her and me.

>Doctors have come from distant cities
Just to see me
Stand over my bed they’re disbelieving
What they’re seeing

They say, I must be one of the wonders
Of God’s own creation
And as far as they see they can offer
No explanation

Newspapers ask such intimate questions
They want confessions
They turn to my head, they try to steal the glory
Of my story

They say, I must be one of the wonders
Of God’s own creation
And as far as they see they can offer
No explanation

I believe
Fate, fate smiled and destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle

“Know this child will be able”

And laughed as my body she lifted
“Know this child will be gifted…
With love, with patience and with faith…
She’ll make her way, make her way

People see me, I’m a challenge
To your balance, I’m over your heads
How I confound you
And astound you

To know , I must be one of the wonders
Of God’s own creation
And as far as they see they can offer
No explanation

I believe
Fate, fate smile and destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle

“Know this child will be able”

And laughed as my body she lifted

“Know this child will be gifted”

And laughed as she came to my mother

“Know this child will not suffer
With love, with patience and with faith
She’ll make her way, make her way
Make her way, make her way”

  1. Wow! That’s really all I can say! I have heard this song 1,000 times but never really paid attention to the lyrics and all I can say is WOW!!

  2. Beautiful lyrics, you’re right. “Know this child will be able” and “know this child will be gifted”. How utterly true.

  3. You have shared this song before about Olivia. Every time you post it I cry. Every time I hear the song on the radio or pop up magically on Pandora I cry. I picture every little face I’ve come across in this career I’ve chosen. I think about all of the things I say to parents to help them cope, to move forward and Natalie says it all so much better. I love that you share this. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for loving your daughter so very much.

  4. Wow…I absolutely LOVE this photograph of Olivia! Almost a teenager?! And she looks so much like you here. Beautiful!

  5. I hate to look like a copycat :), but I often think of that song, (and sing it when I hear it on the radio) thinking of some of my students. I am a special education teacher, teaching preschoolers with multiple disabilities. This song so fits what I think about so many of them. I can see why it makes you think of your sweet daughter as well 🙂
