My personal favorite spot in Acadia is Thunder Hole. Not only is it a gorgeous view, but it’s really relaxing. There are huge rock formations everywhere that you can climb out on, set up camp and relax. You can hear the waves crashing, you can watch the lobster boats check their traps, enjoy the sun and just chill. The next time I’m there, I’m taking a comfy chair, a book, and a cup of coffee and I’m not moving for hours. A hammock would be better but they might frown upon me setting that up.
We never got the full “thunder” experience. We were even there one day at high tide when it should have been big waves crashing in making that “thunder” sound but the ocean was too calm that day. One morning we stopped by and the water was pretty choppy so we got a good feeling of what it would sound like on a rip-roaring day. It was really cool. My favorite spot by far!
The boys loved it because…you guessed it…there were rocks!!! Tons and tons of rocks for climbing. It was difficult for Olivia to navigate but we managed. She’s getting much better about walking and at least trying to do it on her own.
There’s nothing quite like the ocean that allows you to just sit and think and realize how small and insignificant you are in the grand scheme of the universe…and yet at the same time realizing how damn significant and important your small little life really is. At least to those who matter.
